METAR & TAF: what the Part 107 test expects

A METAR is an observation. A TAF is a forecast for the area within 5 SM of the center of the airport's runway complex. Times are in UTC (Z). Wind is direction (true) and speed in knots. Visibility is in statute miles. Cloud heights are in hundreds of feet AGL, and the ceiling is the lowest broken (BKN) or overcast (OVC) layer. In a TAF, FM marks a significant change in prevailing conditions, TEMPO marks temporary fluctuations, and PROB30 marks a 30 percent chance of a thunderstorm or precipitation event.

For Part 107, the weather numbers feed §107.51: at least 3 SM flight visibility from the control station, 500 ft below and 2,000 ft horizontally from clouds, and no higher than 400 ft AGL except near structures.
